The Illinois Lottery’s website, which now allows online sales, went down for about 30 minutes Friday afternoon, preventing some players from buying tickets for the record-breaking Mega Millions game where the jackpot is a record $640 million.
Leonard said the problem “was not due to volume.” About $292,876 in sales were made through the online portal as of 5 p.m. Friday compared to $12.8 million in sales at the state’s more than 7,800 retailers.
“That’s roughly about $33,333 a minute,” she said. “Our volume is really out at our bricks and mortar retailers.”
The lottery’s online purchasing option went live at 7 a.m. Sunday and as of 4 p.m. Friday sales totaled $828,000, Leonard said.
The deadline to purchase tickets for Friday’s Mega Millions game is 9:45 p.m., she said.
