Anibal Calderon, 80, died Tuesday of head injuries after an altercation with another resident on Sunday at Oak Park Healthcare Center, authorities said.
An official with the health department, which oversees nursing home facilities in Illinois, said Wednesday that Oak Park Healthcare hadn’t reported the incident, in apparent violation of state law.
But a spokesman said today the department was in error and that the nursing home did notify it about the incident.
“The facility faxed an incident report to our regional office in Bellwood within 24 hours. It got stuck to another fax,” said IDPH spokeswoman Melaney Arnold. “They are required to report incidents that affect health and safety.”
Investigators continued to investigate Calderon’s death, which has been classified as a homicide.
Arnold said it could be weeks before the investigation is complete.
Meanwhile, TribLocal reports that a wake has been set for Calderon for Friday, with a funeral Saturday.
