A man working on an elevator was hit by it and seriously injured during a mishap this morning at a River North apartment building, authorities said.
The worker was part of a two-man elevator repair crew which was working on an upgrade to the system when it happened about 9:35 a.m. at the River North Park apartment building at 320 W. Illinois St., said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.
The man, in his 20s, was in the “pit’’ below the elevator which was on the second level when “something happened’’ and the elevator, being operated by another person, moved, Langford said.
Though his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening, the man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious to critical condition, Langford said.
The victim had to be rescued from the elevator shaft during an "extended operation,'' according to the fire department's Twitter feed.
