The search continued today for the driver who ran down two elderly women on their way to a hairstylist in Chicago’s Jefferson Park neighborhood, killing one woman on her 82nd birthday.

Police stuffed fliers into doors and mailboxes around the 5700 block of West Lawrence Avenue on Sunday while the second victim remained hospitalized at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. Authorities have not officially identified the woman, said to be in her 70s, and hospital staff declined to discuss her condition.

Margaret Heffernan died of her wounds after the accident just before noon Saturday. Her neighbors at the Saint Andrew Life Center senior home in Niles remembered her as a private person who liked to walk the grounds.

“She was up night and day, roaming the halls,” said 81-year-old Alice Reiter, who lived in the room next to Heffernan.

The pickup truck that hit Heffernan and her friend is described as a dark blue or black Ford F-150 with gray bottom panels. Surveillance video showed the truck, driven by a male, had a ladder in the rear. Police ask anyone with information to call 312-745-4521.
