Northwest Side of Chicago book club. (June 10, 2011)
We meet every six weeks: One member hosts the group, while another leads the discussion. The host chooses the club's next book. A typical discussion can last from 60 to 90 minutes.
The author we would like to meet: is Jose Saramago, author of "Blindness," because of the unique conflict he unravels as the main character struggles between his Marxist ideals and Catholic upbringing.
We did not like: "Expecting Adam: A True Story of Birth, Rebirth and Everyday Magic" by Martha Beck. At the opening of this book the author is extremely self-focused on academia and personal achievement. When she finally awakens to life's everyday miracles, they are too obvious and come too late for her to redeem herself.
We liked: "Corelli's Mandolin" by Louis de Bernieres, "Shadow Divers: The True Adventure of Two Americans Who Risked Everything to Solve One of the Last Mysteries of World War II" by Robert Kurson and "The Book Thief" by Markus Zusak.
Our next book: "Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience and Redemption" by Laura Hillenbrand.
