"Fabulous! A Portrait of Andy Warhol"
By Bonnie Christensen
Henry Holt, $16.99, ages 8-11
The cover images and end pages show Andy Warhol's most famous images — Campbell's Soup cans, for instance — but Bonnie Christensen's words concentrate on the earlier part of Warhol's life, starting in Pittsburgh in the 1930s. In his struggling immigrant family, Andy was the youngest. "Small. Smart. Shy." You could add another "s" for "sick," because Saint Vitus' dance, a nerve disorder, almost felled him in third grade. Magazines, Dick Tracy comics and drawing got him through that year — got him through his life. Adds depth that helps us understand his particular path.
