The gun that police say a man tried to carry into the BMW Championship golf tournament Monday was a SIG Sauer P229 pistol that was loaded, Lake Forest authorities said.
Mark T. Fedder, 48, was cited for obstruction of justice after police said the weapon, which had a bullet loaded in the chamber, was discovered Monday at the security gate to the professional golf tournament, which featured many of the world’s top players and drew tens of thousands of spectators.
Prosecutors have said they are contemplating more serious charges against Fedder. Lake Forest police have said that two additional firearms were found in Fedder’s car in a tournament parking lot and that Fedder initially misled police about why he was allegedly carrying a weapon.
Lake Forest Deputy Police Chief Karl Walldorf said the man does not appear to have an Illinois Firearm Owner Identification card, or the equivalent from another state, and does not appear to possess a concealed carry permit from another state.
Illinois has newly legalized the concealed carry of firearms, but the state will not begin issuing permits until next year, officials have said.
