Man fatally shot by Kane County police identified

The man fatally shot Monday morning by a Kane County sheriff's deputy after he allegedly pointed a rifle at the officers has been officially identified.

According to a release from Kane County Coroner Rob Russell, the man is 52-year-old Luke Bulzak of the 3S300 block of Elfstrom Trail in unincorporated Batavia Township. He was pronounced dead at 7:22 p.m. Monday at Provena Mercy Medical Center in Aurora.

An autopsy is scheduled for Bulzak for Monday afternoon, the release said, and toxicological samples will be sent to a forensic lab for testing.

Police had been called to the man's home after receiving reports that he had been making suicide threats at about 11:40 a.m. Monday morning, Kane County Sheriff's Police said. The officers were told that the man may have fired a gun, police said.

When they arrived, the deputies tried to get the man to drop the weapon, but after refusing, he pointed the weapon at the officers, police said. The sheriff's office sergeant who was on the scene shot the man, officials said.

The Kane County Sheriff's Office and the Illinois State Police are investigating the shooting, police said.
