The victim, identified at the Cook County medical examiner’s office as John Mann, was eastbound on U.S. Route 30 when he went off the roadway for an unknown reason just past the Illinois 394 North Chicago ramp, according to Cook County sheriff’s spokeswoman Sophia Ansari.
The 1994 Kenworth semitrailer-tractor truck veered into a drainage area, continued southeast between two trees across the Route 30 East ramp, and entered a grassy area, she said.
The truck came to rest after plowing into a chain-link fence, and its driver was found dead inside the vehicle, Ansari said.
Mann, of the 100 block of Wilson Avenue in Park Forest, was pronounced dead at 5:37 a.m. at Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday, according to the medical examiner's office.
Ansari said the cause of the 5 a.m. wreck is under investigation.
