Three people were injured, including two Illinois Department of Transportation workers, after an accident this morning on I-290, officials said.

The accident happened about 10:47 a.m. on the westbound lanes of the Eisenhower Expressway just west of Route 83 near Addison, said Illinois State Police Trooper Maria Navarro.

A 32-year-old Naperville man was driving his 2006 Dodge Caravan minivan westbound when he drove on to the shoulder on the left side of the road, said Navarro.

The van first hit an IDOT truck parked on the shoulder performing road work and then spun off and struck another IDOT truck parked in front of the first one, said Navarro.

The driver, who was the only person in the van, was extricated from the vehicle and flown by helicopter to Loyola Hospital in Maywood, she said. He was hospitalized in serious condition.

One worker was taken to Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village with non-life threatening injuries and the other worker was treated at the scene, Navarro said.

Citations are pending against the man in the van, she said.

All of the lanes were closed during the accident. As of 1 p.m., only two lanes and the left shoulder remain closed. State police are investigating.
