An 18-year-old man died after he was shot in an apparent drive-by Monday evening near west suburban Willowbrook.

Shortly after 6:30 p.m., DuPage County sheriffs responded to a call of shots fire near the area of Honeysuckle Rose and Lilac lanes in an unincorporated area south of Willowbrook, according to a DuPage County Sheriff's Office news release.

Witnesses saw a white 4-door vehicle drive into the intersection where a passenger pulled out a gun and fired several shots at the victim, the release said.

The victim was identified as Joshua Holmes, who lived on Honeysuckle Rose Lane. He was taken to Hinsdale Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, according to the release.

Nicole Smith, 40, who lives with her son in a building adjacent to the shooting, said her son was extremely bothered by the slaying.

“I moved here from the city to feel safer and now this happened,” Smith said. “It was right outside my front window.”

Her son, Mark, 16, came home early from school today because he didn’t get any sleep overnight after the slaying.

“There were five shots,” he said. “ I saw the body on the street and I just cant get it out of my mind.”

Devon Williams, 19, who lives in the same complex, said he doesn’t feel safe anymore.

“I don’t feel safe around here. People are always stealing and selling drugs,” Williams said. “I’m not surprised it happened but it does bother me.”

Detectives are investigating leads and said it appears Holmes was targeted.

Anyone with information on the slaying should contact the DuPage County Sheriff's Office at (630) 407-2400.
