Metra douses Kendall County's hopes for rail service

Since at least 2003, some residents of Kendall County have dreamed of getting Metra to serve their fast-growing communities.

That's when then-House Speaker Dennis Hastert, originally from Yorkville, helped to earmark $7.5 million in federal funds to study extending commuter rail service to the farmlands-turned-subdivisions west of Aurora.

Federal money for big-ticket public works projects has since dried up, however, and Metra says it needs to devote its scarce capital budget to existing needs instead of expanding service.
