The thrill is going: Va. park to retire venerable ride

A historic ride at Kings Dominion is making its final run this weekend. The Shockwave was the first stand-up roller coaster on the East Coast when it opened in 1986. The Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/1J1tWFc) reports that the ride is being removed for future growth at a themed area of the Hanover County attraction off of Interstate 95. The park said more than 22 million riders have been on the coaster since its installation. One rider was thrown to his death in August 1999 after he wiggled out of his safety harness, according to an investigation.
