Canton Provides School Backpacks For Needy Students

CANTON — As part of a school-readiness program, the town staff wants to double the number of backpacks available free to students from low-income families.

For each of the past several years, town and school staff have collaborated on a program that provides a backpack filled with school supplies to students from low-income families. Claire Cote, director of senior and social services for the town, said 25 to 30 backpacks were given out each year. She said the plan is to have 60 available when schools start this fall.
