Hartford Native Draws On Childhood Struggles In Organizing Thanksgiving Food Drive

Thanksgiving was a complicated time in Jacquelyn Santiago's childhood.

She was one of five kids being raised by a single mom in the South End. Ends were barely met – most nights dinner was rice or "whatever was the cheapest thing to buy."

A full turkey dinner, even once a year, was out of the question.

"It kinda hurt. It impacted me," Santiago, 22, said Wednesday. "All your friends are talking about this big dinner and when I get home, I knew we couldn't have that."

Things are much easier for her now, she said. But the specter of those tough times long past still weighs on her. And she wanted to address it, to help the kids going...
