SETTING THE SCENE: Monday's outdoor practice started at 2:30 p.m. and wrapped up around 4:45 p.m. Temperatures were in the mid 80s, but the sun beating down on the practice fields made it feel much hotter. Players were in shells after practicing in full pads Saturday and Sunday.
NOT ON THE SAME PAGE: Newly signed slot receiver Brandon Stokley practiced with the team for the first time, but it was obvious that he was unfamiliar with his new teammates and what he was supposed to be doing on a few plays, which is understandable considering he was lining up on his couch a few days ago. On the second play of a red-zone drill, Stokley beat nickelback Corey Graham to the corner for a nice touchdown grab. But three plays later, he appeared to run the wrong route over the middle and quarterback Joe Flacco threw a pass behind Stokley that was intercepted. Later in the drill, Stokley lined up in the slot again, but he was not supposed to be on the field and was called back to the sideline. In another drill, Stokley was back in the slot with the first-teamers, but the offense was called for a delay of game penalty because tight end Visanthe Shiancoe had to run over to Stokley and bark instructions in his ear.
RED ZONE BLUES: In that red-zone drill, Flacco threw touchdown passes to Stokley and wide receiver Torrey Smith, but he completed just four of his nine attempts and was intercepted twice by cornerback Lardarius Webb. The first deflected off wide receiver Jacoby Jones right to Webb.

SLOT WATCH: When Stokley got snaps with the first-team offense, he was solely in the slot. On some of those plays, wide receiver Tandon Doss replaced Jones on the outside. As practice went on, Stokley stayed in the slot but ran with the second-teamers. Third-year wide receiver LaQuan Williams also got snaps in the slot, something we hadn't seen much of during camp.
NICKEL AND DIME: After the emergence of Graham, the Ravens now have a couple of cornerbacks who excel in the slot. Webb and Graham could help them control the middle of the field in their dime package, but it will be interesting to see how they are used in the nickel. Webb was lining up as the left cornerback Monday with Graham covering a slot receiver.
CAN'T TOUCH THIS: Jones does not like to get touched in non-contact drills. For the second straight practice, the wide-out got bumped by a defender and appeared to be annoyed. On this day, it was rookie cornerback Moe Lee who knocked him down. Jones had a few words for him after the play.
IMAGINE THE POSSIBILITIES: Backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor was the holder for some of kicker Justin Tucker's field goals Monday. If they can run successful fake field goal plays with the regular holder, punter Sam Koch, imagine what they could do with Taylor.
LOOK WHO'S BACK: Right guard Marshal Yanda returned to practice for the first time since offseason shoulder surgery. He moved around well and looked to be in good shape, but his participation was limited and it is hard to draw conclusions about linemen when they are in shells. There shouldn't be any concerns about his conditioning, though. Before last week's preseason game, Yanda was spotted on the field running gassers with injured inside linebacker Jameel McClain.
INJURY REPORT: Running back Bernard Pierce (left knee) and inside linebacker Bryan Hall (hamstring) returned to practice after sitting out the previous two, but they did not do much. Outside linebacker Courtney Upshaw missed a second straight practice after leaving the team for the birth of a child. Guard Ramon Harewood (knee) and cornerback Chykie Brown (undisclosed) did not suit up after practicing with the team Sunday. Wide receivers Deonte Thompson (left foot) and Marlon Brown (knee), cornerback Chris Johnson (undisclosed), defensive end Marcus Spears (undisclosed), tight end Ed Dickson (right hamstring tear), and McClain (bruised spine) remain sidelined.
OVERHEARD: "He jumped offsides in slow motion!" — outside linebacker Terrell Suggs after defensive tackle Arthur Jones tiptoed across the line early and was flagged for an offsides penalty.
