Lutherville native Charlie Singer is juggling school and a lifelong dream.

He'll have a chance to realize that dream starting Friday.

Singer, 19, is a rising sophomore at Tulane studying business and architecture. He also is enrolled in the Oakcliff Sailing Center's Sapling program, an exclusive summer-long camp that helps give 12 to 15 aspiring professional sailors ages to 18 to 30 the skills they need to succeed in yacht racing.

Beginning Friday, Singer, along with seven other Sapling members, will be part of a team competing in the Annapolis to Newport Race aboard the Temptation-Oakcliff, a 50-foot yacht sailing from the mouth of the Severn River to Castle Hill Light in Newport Neck, R.I.

Singer said focusing exclusively on yacht racing this summer has been a welcome change, especially because he will get to compete in his longest race to date this weekend.

"So far, so good," he said. "It'll be interesting to see how it plays out from here, but I'm going to enjoy the opportunity at hand this weekend and the rest of the summer."

Singer's role on a team consisting of 15 sailors, adults, sponsors and coaches will be doing pit, meaning he will help with raising and lowering sails, changing them and altering their shapes.

Also on the boat is Ben Jarashow, an Annapolis native. A trimmer, he helps accelerate the yacht.

The Annapolis to Newport Race takes place every two years in June and typically lasts three to four days. This year's race has 57 boats vying for the City of Annapolis Trophy.

Crews will have to battle with a tropical storm expected to make its way up the East Coast this weekend.

Singer said he's raced in high winds and sleet before. He is looking forward to the obstacle.

"I'm generally a calm and relaxed person," Singer said. "I'm excited for something new and adventurous, so I am stoked to get at it."
