James F. Bray, a retired grocery store manager, died Tuesday of an aneurysm at his Jessup home. He was 76.
Mr. Bray was born in Virginia and raised in North Carolina and Baltimore, where he graduated from city public schools.
He served in the Army for three months and was honorably discharged in 1958.
Mr. Bray worked for Food Fair and later as an evening grocery manager at Pantry Pride from 1952 to 1981, when he retired. During the 1980s, he worked for several years for Valu Food as a manager.
The former Brooklyn Park resident, who later moved to Jessup where he lived for many years, was an active member of Wesley Grove United Methodist Church. He helped prepare food boxes for the needy and worked at numerous church-sponsored events.
He had been a member of the Food Employees Labor Relations Association and American Legion Post 187.
Mr. Bray enjoyed participating in American Legion parades held in Ocean City, family members said.
His wife of 39 years, the former Betty Lee Ayers, died in 2007.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at his church, 1320 Dorsey Road, Hanover.
Surviving are a daughter, Sandi Bray of Forest Hill; a stepson, Kennard Ayers of Baltimore; a stepdaughter, Janine Horn of Pasadena; a sister, Barbara Woods of Delmar; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
