"There will be a little bit [of] a trickle, but the bulk of them will be returning this weekend," said Chris MacLarion, acting president of United Steelworkers Local 9477, which represents workers at the Baltimore County steel mill.
He estimated 550 employees would be returning to work shortly.
"The bottom line is we're happy … that the company seems to be getting more stable," said MacLarion. "This is good."
RG Steel, the company that owns the Sparrows Point plant, had notified state officials that it was laying off about 720 workers until early March. A call to Bette Kovach, a spokeswoman for RG Steel, was not immediately returned Friday evening.
Gov. Martin O'Malley had been encouraging RG Steel's lenders to help stabilize the company's financial arrangements. The steelmaker and the banks had been in talks to reach a financing agreement.
