Talking genealogy Wanda Franklin, director of the Columbia Family History Center and mother of three adopted children, will host a presentation on "Searching for Birth Parents: Some Experiences and Resources" at 3 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 4100 Saint Johns Lane in Ellicott City. She will talk about search techniques, reactions of relatives who were discovered and how finding birth relatives has affected the lives of her children. Free. Information: 410-796-3022.
Gala The Jewish Federation of Howard County holds its annual fundraising gala, "Federation Live," at 6 p.m. at Ten Oaks Ballroom, 5000 Signal Bell Lane, Clarksville. This year's honoree is Joan Friedberg. Event also includes a cocktail reception and dinner and a luxury raffle. Dietary laws will be observed and Star-K kosher-certified food is available. 'Researching Your Civil War Soldier' The Howard County Genealogical Society holds its monthly meeting at 7:30 p.m. at the Ellicott City Senior Center, 9401 Frederick Road. Oldies concert Iris Hirsch and the Retro-Rockets, a six-piece band specializing in oldies music, performs at 6 p.m. at 5485 Harpers Farm Road in Columbia as part of the Harper's Choice Village Center Courtyard Series.
