Syria a French legacy, not British

While British imperialism may have been a mixed blessing for many nations that previously composed the British empire, certainly Syria was not one of them ("British imperialism made a mess in Syria; now they want us to clean up after them," Sept. 11). The letter writer, after checking the history of the region, should note that Syria came under French and not British domination and that ever since Syria gained its independence, France has felt a certain amount of responsibility for that nation's future.

This explains why French President Francois Hollande has expressed a concern about what has occurred in Syria, even to the extent of proposed intervention, while Great Britain in its actions has been influenced by its own agenda and regard for the U.S.
