Recovery support grants

The Department of Health's bureau of behavioral health will offer a total of $25,000 in mini-grants to community organizations and community service providers for fiscal year 2014 projects. Preference will be given to nonprofit organizations. Applicants can attend a pre-proposal workshop at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7 in the lower level conference room of the Health Services Building, 3 Harry S. Truman Parkway, Annapolis. Breast cancer awareness

The Department of Health's Learn to Live program is offering a free women's health kit that includes information on cancer screenings, nutrition and other women's health topics. The health department also offers free mammograms and breast exams to eligible women. Call 410-222-7979 or visit

Flu shots

The Department of Health will provide free vaccinations. Nasal-spray vaccine is for healthy peoples age 2 to 49. It is not for pregnant women. The clinics also have the high dose flu shots for people 65 years of age and older. Pneumococcal vaccine is also available.

The following locations will provide vaccinations:

•Glen Burnie Health Center, from 8:30 .m. to 11:30 a.m. and from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays, 416 A Street, S.W. Glen Burnie 410-222-6633. Tuesday Oct. 22 will have extended afternoon hours from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

National recovery month

The Department of Health is joining with community groups and providers in a program to support a healthy lifestyle for people in long-term recovery from mental and substance use disorders. West Nile virus

The Department of Health reminds residents to take precautions to protect themselves and their families from mosquito bites to help prevent West Nile virus.
