WBFF leads Baltimore stations in regional Emmys - Ron Smith honored

WBFF-Fox45 led Baltimore stations in winning eight regional Emmys announced Saturday night at the Newseum in Washington.

But overall, that was only good for a fifth place finish behind one Virginia and three Washington stations in the competition for the awards presented by the National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

WTVR, in Richmond, won 12 regional Emmys, while Washington outlets WRC, WJLA and WTTG won 11, 10 and 9, respectively.

The Ted Yates Award was presented posthumously to WBAL radio host Ron Smith who died in December of pancreatic cancer after sharing many of his final days with his listeners until he was too weak to be on-air.

Other area broadcast and cable outlet that received regional Emmys include: Maryland Public Television (6), MASN (5), Comcast SportsNet (5), RLTV (1), WBAL (1), WMAR (1) and WJZ (1).

The awards covered work presented during 2011.

From the chapter's announcement of awards:

Awards for excellence were presented in 96 categories, in addition to the Special Awardees
for the Board of Governors Award to Jim Lehrer (Executive Editor and Anchor PBS NewsHour),
and the Ted Yates Award to Ron Smith (Posthumously) (Retired News Anchor - WBAL-TV
