NEW: The 28th Maryland Wine Festival is on Sept. 17-18 at the Carroll County Farm Museum. The event includes tastings from participating wineries, live music, foods from local restaurants, arts and crafts and wine education seminars.
A gala dinner is being held Saturday, Sept. 17 at the Baltimore International College in Little Italy to benefit BIC Senior Associate Chef Instructor Michael Wagner and his family. The suggested donation for the evening, which will include live entertainment and a silent auction, is $125 ($200 per couple). Harbor Magic Catering continues its Culinary Event series with a Fall Harvest Wine Dinner on Sept. 22 at the Pier 5 Hotel. The dinner, including wine pairings, is $75. The remaining events in the 2011 calendar, which will be held at the Admiral Fell Inn, include a Beers of the World Dinner on Oct. 21, a free Thanksgiving Cooking Demo on Nov. 10 and an Old Thyme Christmas Dinner on Dec. 14; this dinner is $75 per person.
Also, on Wednesday, Sept. 22, some 40 Baltimore-area restaurants are participating in the 2011 edition of Dining Out for Life, a fundraiser for Moveable Feast.
Food related events at Baltimore Book Festival (Sept. 23-25) include appearances by Food Network personalities Marcela Valladolid, Aaron "Big Daddy" McCargo, Daisy Martinez and cookbook authors Leo Patalinghung, Joe Yonan and Sandy Pollock and Crystal Cook. Opening day events on Friday, Sept. 23 include Dine Downtown Baltimore at the BFF (noon-2 p.m.) and a Friday evening Happy Hour (5-8 p.m.). Food trucks will be making their first official Baltimore Book Festival appearance.
The Baltimore Chapter of the American Institute of Wine & Food will host its second edition of the Farmer & the Chef, a cooking competition pairing Baltimore chefs with local farmers, on Monday, Sept. 26 at the Maryland Science Center. The event is a fundraiser for the institute's Days of Taste charity.
On Tuesday, Sept. 27, the National Aquarium's occasional Fresh Thoughts series on sustainable seafood resumes with The Dogwood's Galen Sampson on the oyster. This is actually an encore appearance for Sampson, whose three-course oyster dinner for Fresh Thoughts was a big hit.
NEW: Also on Sept. 27, Bryan Voltaggio hosts a No Kid Hungry Dinner, a benefit dinner for Share Our Strength, with guest chefs Cathal Armstrong (Restaurant Eve, Alexandria, Va.), Spike Gjerde (Woodberry Kitchen), Matt Hill (Charlie Palmer Steak, Washington, D.C.), and Charlie Palmer himself. Tickets range from $125 for the pre-dinner reception to $2,000 for seats at Table 21, where you can watch the chefs in action. There is more information here.
From Oct. 2-9, over 250 restaurants from Philadelphia to Northern Virginia will feature Maryland seafood on their menus as part of bay" href="http://dnr.maryland.gov/fisheries/fromthebay/" target="_blank">From the Bay, For the Bay, a dining promotion benefiting the Oyster Recovery Partnership, non-profit organization that works to replenish the population of our native and treasured Chesapeake Bay oyster.
Ryleigh's Oyster Ball on Oct. 6, a fundraiser for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and Maryland’s Oyster Recovery Partnership, features unlimited Champagne, raw oysters, beer, and vodka cocktails, along with delicious hors d'oeuvres prepared by Ryleigh’s executive chef Shawn McClure. Tickets are $60. The Oyster Ball kicks off the fifth annual OysterFest at Ryleigh's, Oct. 7-9, which this year features the inaugural oyster shucking competition.
Chosen Food: Cuisine, Culture and American Jewish Identity opens at the Jewish Museum of Maryland on Oct. 23. The exhibition will "examine the diversity of Jewish eating and uncovers the messages" in the meals we eat.
