The Orioles announced their minor league coaching staffs for the 2012 season, most notably making official the hiring of longtime minor league manager Ron Johnson as manager of Triple-A Norfolk. Johnson was the first base coach for the Boston Red Sox the past two seasons.
Also of note, the team announced that former Orioles player Mike Bordick, who this month joined MASN as a color analyst, will remain with the organization as special assignment instructor. Ex-Orioles pitcher Scott McGregor, formerly the pitching coach at short-season Single-A Aberdeen, will be the minor league rehabilitation coordinator working out of Sarasota, Fla.
Former Orioles pitcher Alan Mills will take over McGregor's spot in Aberdeen. Former Norfolk manager Gary Allenson will be the manager at Aberdeen.

The Orioles today announced the coaching staffs for their seven minor league affiliates for the 2012 season.
Ron Johnson joins the organization as the manager at Triple-A Norfolk after spending the last 12 seasons in the Boston Red Sox organization, including the 2010-11 seasons as the first base coach for the major league club. Johnson has posted a 1,261-1,262 record in 18 seasons as a minor league manager. Mike Griffin will serve as pitching coach for the fifth consecutive season in the organization and third straight season in Norfolk. Griffin was named the winner of the Cal Ripken Sr. Player Development Award in 2009 and 2010. Denny Walling will serve as hitting coach for the Tides in 2012 after spending the past six seasons as the minor league roving hitting instructor. Walling has five years of experience as a major league hitting coach (1996-98 with Oakland and 2003-04 with the New York Mets) and has been the Orioles’ minor league hitting instructor for 12 years (1995, 1999-2002 and 2005-11). Mark Shires enters his 13th year as an athletic trainer in the Orioles’ system and his sixth year at Norfolk.
Gary Kendall will return for his second season as manager at Double-A Bowie. 2012 will be Kendall’s 13th season in the organization and ninth season as a manager. Denny Hocking will return for his second year as field coach for the Baysox and his third season in the organization. Kennie Steenstra enters his third year as Bowie’s pitching coach and his eighth season as a pitching coach in the organization. Aaron Scott, in his 10th season in the organization, will serve as Bowie’s athletic trainer for the second consecutive year.
Orlando Gomez will return to manage Class-A Frederick for the third consecutive year. 2012 will be his eighth season in the organization and sixth as a manager. He was the winner of the 2011 Cal Ripken Sr. Player Development Award after leading the Keys to the Carolina League championship. Blaine Beatty returns for his sixth season as pitching coach for the Keys and former major leaguer Jose Hernandez will serve as field coach for Frederick after serving as field coach for Delmarva in 2011 and the Gulf Coast Orioles in 2010. Pat Wesley begins his ninth full season as an athletic trainer in the Orioles’ organization and fourth with Frederick.
Class-A Delmarva will again be managed by Ryan Minor, who enters his third year as manager of the Shorebirds after two seasons as their hitting coach. Troy Mattes begins his third year as pitching coach at Delmarva and his sixth year in the organization. Einar Diaz, who is in his fifth year with the Orioles and spent 2011 as a field coach at Bowie, will serve as field coach for the Shorebirds. Athletic trainer Will Lawhorn enters his second year in Delmarva and his fourth in the organization.
Gary Allenson returns for his seventh season in the organization and will manage Short-season (A) Aberdeen in 2012 after five years as manager at Norfolk. Brad Komminsk will serve as hitting coach for the IronBirds in 2012 after serving in the same capacity at Norfolk in 2011 and the previous four seasons as the manager at Bowie (2007-10). Former Oriole pitcher Alan Mills joins the organization as the pitching coach at Aberdeen. Trek Schuler begins his 13th season as an athletic trainer in the Orioles organization and his fourth in Aberdeen.
Ramon Sambo returns for his sixth season as a manager in the organization and his fifth season managing the Gulf Coast League Orioles (also 2007, 2009-2011). Larry Jaster who is in his 16th year in the organization, returns as pitching coach and Milt May returns for his third season as a field coach for the Gulf Coast League club.
Elvis Morel will manage the Orioles’ entry in the Dominican Summer League and will be assisted by pitching coaches Robert Perez and Dionis Pascual and hitting coach Ramon Caraballo. Benny Adames will serve as bench/outfield coach, while Ruben Francisco will serve as first base/baserunning coach and Ramon Lubo will oversee catchers and coach third base. Jose Miguel Rosario and Ludovino Alonzo Marte will again serve as Athletic Trainers for the DSL club.
Brian Graham enters his fifth season as Coordinator of Instruction. Rick Peterson has joined the organization as Director of Pitching Development, while Mike Boulanger enters his first year as Minor League Hitting Coordinator. Mike Bordick will serve as a Special Assignment Instructor, while Bobby Dickerson (infield), Don Werner (catching), Butch Davis (outfield) and Eric Cormell (baserunning and speed training) will serve as roving instructors.
Scott McGregor will spend his 11th year as a coach in the organization and first season as the Sarasota-based Rehabilitation Coordinator and after seven years as a coach at Aberdeen, Cesar Devarezwill oversee the rehabilitation of position players in Sarasota. Dave Schmidt, in his 15th season in the organization, will serve as the Coordinator of Sarasota Operations for the Orioles, while Felipe Alou Jr. returns for his fifth year as Director of the Orioles’ Dominican Academy.
Len Johnston enters his 36th season with the Orioles organization, serving as the Administrator for Sarasota Operations. Dave Walker will begin his 10th year as Minor League Medical Coordinator and 19th season in the Orioles’ farm system. Ryan Driscoll returns for his fourth year as Minor League Strength and Conditioning Coordinator and Jake Parker will enter his third season as Minor League Equipment Manager.
