North County wrestler wins Eastern Nationals

North County wrestler Lorenzo Maddox, competing in the 285-pound weight class, won the Middle Atlantic States Wrestling Association (MAWA) High School Elite Division of the Eastern National Wrestling Championships.

He is the first North County wrestler to win the tournament, only the third Maryland high school heavyweight to win the tournament and the fourth Anne Arundel County wrestler to win the tournament in any of the 14 weight classes, according to information released by the school.

The championships, held Saturday and Sunday in Salisbury, drew 10,000 competitors, including 250 from high schools in 14 states.

"Ironically, he twisted his ankle badly attempting an inside trip maneuver in the second period of the finals," North County coach Wayne Liddick said. "He had to decide whether to continue or not while trailing 3-0. He did continue and pulled out a 5-4 victory while hardly able to walk.

"It's mid-week and he's still on crutches and hasn't been to school yet this week."

Maddox beat Thomas Tehan (from New Jersey.), 6-3; Dylan O'Connor (Virginia), 3-1; and Josh Dierolf (Pennsylvania), 5-4.
