Dear Members of the Loyola Community,
This is a moment of unimaginable sorrow for the entire Loyola family. The loss of young lives -- particularly under such circumstances -- defies understanding. It calls upon us to hold fast to those we care about, to cherish every moment we are able to share with them. It also calls upon us to reflect on the challenges faced by those around us and to do all we can to show our support for those in our community. My own thoughts and prayers are with the Parente family and those who mourn them.
All members of the Loyola community are urged to take advantage of the grief counseling and other support services available to them. For more information or to seek these services, please stop in to the Counseling Center on the first floor of the Humanities Center, Campus Ministry in Cohn Hall, or reach out to any member of the residential life staff for more information. Additional information on the grieving process and available resources are accessible on the Counseling Center's Web site at www.loyola.edu/counselingcenter, or by calling the Center at ext. 5109.
Even for those who did not know Stephanie, this tragedy has the potential to have a tremendous impact. With the semester coming to a close and finals nearly upon us, it is important to recognize signs of stress as they emerge. I encourage all of you to be very mindful of your emotional and spiritual wellbeing, and to make use of all the support services available to you as a member of the Loyola community.
A tragedy such as this reminds us of the mystery and destructive power of evil in our world. For those of us who are Christian, we are mindful of Christ's resurrection just celebrated on Easter Sunday, and so rely on God's bountiful goodness to help us move forward with hope and peace.
I will officiate at a special Mass that will be offered at 9 p.m. this evening in the Alumni Memorial Chapel in memory of Stephanie and her family. All are welcome, and I encourage you all to join together as a community in grieving this loss and praying for all those affected by this tragedy.
Additional information on formal funeral arrangements will be made available as soon as possible.
With deepest sorrow,
The Reverend Brian F. Linnane, S.J.
