Maryland health officials are warning consumers not to eat any cheese products made by Roos Foods because they are “presumptively positive” for Listeria, a bacteria that can cause serious infection.
Roos brands include Santa Rosa de Lima, Amigo, Mexicana, Suyapa, La Chapina and La Purisima Crema Nica.
Officials at the state Department of Health and Mental Hygiene continue testing the products to confirm the presence of Listeria in the cheese made by the Kenton, Del. Company, which did not respond to request for comment..
Roos is a family owned business that produces a variety of dairy products of Latin origin, according to the company website. The site says the products are handmade, “as it was made in traditional country homes and farms of El Salvador, other Central American countries and Mexico.”
The site also says they are made using the “strictest pasteurization processes.”
Roos products are sold in Latin stores on the East Coast, California and Texas.
Listeriosis, caused by eating the Listeria bacteria, usually occurs within three days to 10 weeks, but usually within three weeks. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, convulsions, nausea and diarrhea. Treatment includes antibiotics.
Pregnant women, newborns, seniors and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk.
