At this week’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, we caught up with Maryland-based model Casandra Nicole, who is represented by THE Artist Agency in Washington, D.C., as well as top agencies in New York and Europe. We asked her what it’s like to model for top designers such as Marchesa during New York’s twice-a-year shows.
What is a typical New York Fashion Week day like?
Fittings… hair….make up….show….. Repeat. Fashion week means early mornings and late nights. Mingling amongst the world's most creative and iconic masters of fashion, style and elegance.
How were you picked to walk for Marchesa?
I was sent to a fitting/casting for a Marchesa show several seasons ago by my agency. Luckily have been booking with them ever since. I can honestly say they are one of my favorites.
How long have you been modeling?
I guess it’s been six years. It feels like so much longer because I'm always thinking in seasons — pre-fall, fall, resort, spring, bridal. I think one of the most amazing things about being a model is that your job is constantly changing. Every season is another challenge, another opportunity to better yourself and your career.
What other designers have you worked with?
Valentino, Jason Wu, Chanel, Armani, Boy Meets Girl, Oscar De La Renta, Akris, Carolina Herrera.
How often do you work abroad?
I'm addicted to traveling so I try to work overseas as much as possible, whether it be the Asian market, Spain or Paris.
Runway versus print?
It's a tie! I love runway because you get that rush of adrenaline right before you walk. However, at the same time, I love print because it's always such a challenge to be able to master and convey through your body and face alone the exact attitude and message the designer is looking for.
What tips do you have for aspiring models?
Honestly, have fun with it; take every step day by day. Set high goals and find the determination to reach them, but most importantly, be grateful for every moment and opportunity that comes your way.
How do you keep in shape?
I'm a runner and a health food junkie. I run between 3 and 6 miles every day and love to cook and experiment with new recipes, unique foods and good wines. When I'm on the road, I can't always get to a treadmill or outside to run, so I keep an Ashtanga Yoga app on my phone.
When going to a show, what are the items you always bring with you?
My iPad, Rosebud lip balm, Buxom lip gloss, Smartwater, a snack (always carrots and an acai snack bar) and a pack of Big Red gum for after the show.
What are your favorite beauty products?
Chanel Sublimage creme moisturizer and eye cream, organic apple cider (for my face and hair), Buxom lip gloss (Katie color), Dior precision eyebrow pencil (the BEST in the world), and my Shu Uemura blush.
