Boys Athlete of the Week (Dec. 18, 2013): Jordan McNeil, Mount St. Joseph, basketball
The 6-foot-5 senior guard led the No. 2 Gaels (9-1) to their second-straight Gonzaga D.C. Classic Championship this weekend and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player for his effort in Mount St. Joseph¿s three wins. After opening the tournament on Friday with 16 points in a 78-71 win over Herndon, Va., McNeil scored 12 points in the Gaels' 63-60 win over Archbishop Molloy in Saturday's semifinals. He saved his best for Sunday's championship game, a 71-58 win over Cesar Chavez. McNeil scored a game-high 22 points with four rebounds and three assists and hit a pivotal 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter that gave the Gaels the lead for good. McNeil, a three-year varsity player in his first year as a starter, opened last week with 14 points in a 62-57 overtime win against Calvert Hall on Wednesday. He¿s averaging 14 points per game this season.
