Boys Athlete of the Week (May 27, 2014): Cody Morris, Reservoir, baseball
The hard-throwing junior pitcher led No. 2 Reservoir (22-2) to its first state championship, capped by his complete game in Saturday's 2-0 win over North Harford for the Class 3A title. Morris allowed two hits, walked two batters and struck out 11 in claiming the win at Ripken Stadium. He also went 1-for-3 at the plate. In Tuesday's 12-4 semifinal victory over Thomas Johnson, Morris pitched four scoreless innings, striking out nine to record the win in that game as well. He was 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored. Committed to play at South Carolina, Morris went 8-1 this season with a 0.80 ERA. He finished with 90 strikeouts in 52 1/3 innings pitched. Offensively, he batted .385 for the season with 12 RBIs and 15 runs scored. On Tuesday, Morris was named the 2014 Gatorade Maryland Baseball Player of the Year.
