NEW ORLEANS (New Orleans East)—State Rep. Austin Badon, D-New Orleans, announced Friday he is dropping out of the race for Mayor of New Orleans in 2010.
"After careful thought and deliberation with my family, I've decided not to run for Mayor of New Orleans," Rep. Badon told a crowd of reporters in New Orleans East Friday morning.
He went on to say that the support that he expected for his campaign did not materialize.
Badon announced he will run for New Orleans City Council District E seat, currently occupied by Cynthia Willard-Lewis. Willard-Lewis cannot run for re-election in District E because of term limitations, but does plan to run for a council-at-large seat.
As of October 23, the confirmed candidates for Mayor of New Orleans are Sen. Ed Murray, D-New Orleans, and housing advocate James Perry. However, ABC26 Political Analyst Jeff Crouere is reminded of the 2002 mayor's race, when candidate Ray Nagin seemingly appeared out of nowhere.
