3. Two Exhibits

Hartford's Real Art Ways is the best spot around for cutting-edge art on the rise, and this month's no exception. Head to their Creative Cocktail Hour on Thursday to feast your eyes on two exhibits — Dennis Maher's House of the Unmaker (pictured) and Steve Lambert's Capitalism Works for Me! — that'll have you deeply engaged and thinking. Maher's work, which utilizes discarded building-site detritus in complex assemblages, hangs around the gallery until August. But Lambert's, a 20-foot-long, interactively rigged, lighted sign that allows you to vote "true" or "false," will promptly move on to a new locale. Who knows: maybe some of your fellow creative types — many of whom will no doubt be as opinionated about art as you are — will shed some light where there was only darkness.

  15. RAW: Hartford kicks off June 7 at the Russian Lady in Hartford

Mixed-media and installation artists, bands, fashion designers (sometimes provocative ones; see above), delicious drinks: all part of RAW: Hartford, a new monthly event (not to be confused with Hartford's Real Art Ways) that kicks off at the Russian Lady. It's a chance for local creative types to make a name for themselves, to hobnob and collaborate with fellow artists and even to sell their works at zero commission. Hartford is the latest city, along with Atlanta, Reno, Honolulu and Raleigh, to get its own RAW event — they're produced by a national, altruistic for-profit whose goal is to get things brewing in local arts hotspots — and it's the nearest one you'll find between Boston and New York. (RAW: Hartford will return in July at another location, so be on the lookout.)

  19. Three new collections on display this summer at Real Art Ways in Hartford

No, your eyes are fine. What you're looking at is Hartford artist Dave Sinaguglia's "Drinking with Friends," part of an exhibit of his work that's called Skin in the Game, which opens this Thursday at Real Art Ways. It's one of three collections that'll hang through the summer, along with works by artists Samuel Rowlett and Ken Morgan, both of whom have strong ties to Connecticut. While Sinaguglia's photographic art deals with what he calls "projections of middle-class masculinity," Rowlett, an artist who's comfortable in a variety of mediums, weaves together studio practice, community and the natural world. Hogan's work is psychedelic and playful, and that's a good thing.

  21. Weird, Wild Stuff: The Odd Ball, April 14th at Real Art Ways in Hartford

There's only one Real Art Ways, and although there are lots of odd people around, there's only one Odd Ball, the annual celebration of creativity and weirdness. The spacious gallery morphs into a quasi-psychedelic realm of music, art, dancing and delicious treats. Costumes are definitely recommended.
