Brad Guarino has some very serious and well-thought-out opinions about how boys learn how to become men. He puts these philosophies into his collage-like paintings. 11. Wicked Knee Plays Real Art Ways on June 22

We frequently sing the praises of Hartford's super-hip Real Art Ways, our local portal into the world of amazing avant-garde films, art, theater, music and unclassifiable happenings. It's a fun parlor game trying to figure out what they'll program next, like the two provocative bands playing there this week: M.A.K.U. Sound System (June 20, at Creative Cocktail Hour), a New York-based eight-piece Colombian psych-punk-jazz ensemble, and Wicked Knee (pictured, June 22), drummer Billy Martin's other band (he's the middle "M" in trip-hop jazzers Medeski, Martin & Wood), a brass-heavy ragtime funk quartet that'll perform outside. Those curious souls among us will surely want to be at both events; the 6/20 CCH also boasts the opening reception for Ponzi Structure, a new exhibit by Connecticut artist John O'Donnell. But then the other show's outside. Too tough to call, so go to both.

  17. Sam Ekwurtzel's "On the Beach" on Display at Real Art Ways

New London artist Sam Ekwurtzel blurs the lines between sculpture and seafaring with On the Beach, an exhibit appearing at Real Art Ways until mid-August. Ekwurtzel's large-scale designs (that's one pictured above), made out of native white pine, brownstone, cast iron and concrete shaped with some home-made and crude equipment, were inspired by his adventures in boat-building, engineering and navigation. His sculptures have appeared in galleries in NYC, Richmond, Va. and Louisville, Ky.

  19. 'Sam Ekwurtzel: On the Beach' At Real Art Ways

In Japan, huge concrete structures called tetrapods sit on the beach, designed to fortify coastal areas by dissipating the waves, which can become unruly. "They are thrown onto the beach like jacks," Sam Ekwurtzel says. "There are thousands of them, a running plateau."
