  1. Valerie Sayers on Joe DiMaggio and "The Powers"

In "The Powers," Valerie Sayers' long-awaited sixth novel — her first since "Brain Fever" (1996) — the great Yankees slugger Joe DiMaggio is embarking on his historic hitting streak of 1941, riveting Americans as much as or more than the news from Europe, where World War II is gathering its terrible momentum. Like many athletes, Sayers' DiMaggio is deeply superstitious, so much so that he believes he can foresee the future — his own and that of America itself, including the attack on Pearl Harbor.

  3. Gary Stein: Commendable, sure, but not "heroic"

I know a true hero, although he surely wouldn't call himself one. He is the son of a very close friend. He served in Iraq, and is now on duty in Afghanistan. And, like all the other American service people there, he volunteered to put his life on the...

  7. A country song, assumptions -- and a racial outcry

Southern white men don't usually drive racial dialogue. For as long as race has riven America, they have been depicted more often as the problem than the solution. So after country music star Brad Paisley released his new song "Accidental Racist" this...

  15. Was trip to Cuba by Jay-Z, Beyonce wrong?

A recent trip taken by Jay-Z and his wife, Beyonce, to Cuba has drawn heated criticism from members of Congress. Federal law bans travel to Cuba by American citizens unless the government makes an exception. The White House says President Obama didn’t know about the trip. The Treasury Department says it authorized a cultural exchange visit to Cuba without knowing that the guests would include Jay-Z and Beyonce. Was Jay-Z wrong to take the trip? Was the Treasury Department wrong to authorize it? Does the ban on most U.S. travel to Cuba hurt the island’s communist dictators by denying them a critical source of cash? Or does it help them keep their grip on power by insulating the Cuban people from contact with Americans? Talk about it!

  19. Edward Kelsey Moore on 'The Supremes at Earl's All-You-Can-Eat'

When he was a boy of 7 or 8, Edward Kelsey Moore developed a habit that, unbeknown to him at the time, would come in handy years later: eavesdropping. At holiday gatherings of his extended family in the suburbs of Indianapolis, or in the small Kentucky town near Louisville where his mother had grown up, the men in the family would retire to the den to watch sports on TV while the women would remain at the table, telling stories that, from his hiding place in the corner, little Ed knew he wasn't supposed to hear — which made them all the more enticing.
