Summer fun with Mr. Magoo, Jerry Lewis et al: Kenneth Turan's DVD picks

When the weather is warm, it's good to laugh, and some new discs make that as easy as possible.

The biggest deal of the three discussed here is the four-disc, DVD/BluRay 50th anniversary ultimate collector's edition of Jerry Lewis as "The Nutty Professor," available from Warner Bros. in a handsome boxed set. If you ever wanted to figure out why Lewis is so beloved in France, here is your chance.

Speaking of France, French silent comic Max Linder is featured on a new disc from Kino titled "Slapstick Symposium." No less an authority than Charlie Chaplin considered Linder to be "the great master," and this edition displays four of the comedies he made in Hollywood.

Beloved by everyone is the famously nearsighted Mr. Magoo. All 53 of his theatrical cartoons are contained in "Mr. Magoo: The Theatrical Collection 1949-59" from Shout Factory. Really hard to resist.
