1. St. Louis Symphony plays to its potential in Costa Mesa

The spirit of the St. Louis Symphony, until now, hasn't seemed quite able to handle head winds.
The spirit of the St. Louis Symphony, until now, hasn't seemed quite able to handle head winds. The orchestra, which was transformed under music director David Robertson from the dull and dispirited ensemble he took over in 2005 into one of America's...

5. The Crowd: Putting knowledge in the spotlight

There is a lot of talk these days about the intentions of America's founding fathers (and mothers). As our nation comes to terms with many challenges, one of the sentiments of our ancestors does not get as much attention as some of the others. That ideal refers to the core necessity of a democracy that is based on an informed and educated mass citizenry.

11. St. Patrick's parade lacked Ravens band

My compliments to the organizers of the recent Baltimore St. Patrick's Day Parade ("Thousands line Baltimore Streets for St. Patrick," March 11). It was a great parade, but it was missing one key ingredient: the Ravens marching band — Baltimore's Marching Ravens — was nowhere to be seen!

13. Child-care credit query

My husband and I both work, and we have two young children at home during the day. I'm very lucky to have my mother come in and watch the kids while we're gone. We actually pay her in cash (but not nearly what she's worth!) and would like to take advantage of the Child Care Credit. Can we do that, even though we're "hiring" a relative? She is a widow, has a pension, Social Security, and enough interest and dividends from investments that she files a tax return every year.

19. The cooking of the greens (and potatoes)

Skip the corned beef (too salty and weirdly pink) and the green beer (totally inauthentic) this St. Patrick's Day and make some comforting colcannon instead. Who doesn't like mashed potatoes with extra good stuff stirred in?
