    James McGrath Morris on Ethel Payne, 'Eye on the Struggle'
    Although white Chicagoans knew little about Ethel Payne, a city reporter and later Washington correspondent for the Chicago Defender in the 1950s and '60s, African-Americans here and around the country came to venerate her as the most prominent female black journalist of her day. Late in life, Payne became nationally known to white audiences as a correspondent and commentator for CBS News, but the seminal work of her career covering the civil rights movement took place in the context of the black media, to which whites paid minimal attention.
