3. The 'Night Stalker' and the best of true-crime cinema

The strange saga of Richard Ramirez, the serial killer known as the "Night Stalker," who died Friday, had all the earmarks of a grungy low-budget thriller come to life. With his random, sensationalistic crimes, his startling capture by an angry mob and his notorious legion of admirers, Ramirez's rampage of death and mayhem was a disturbing tale seemingly tailor-made for Hollywood.

  11. Exxxotica porn convention moves to Fort Lauderdale

Moving the Exxxotica trade show, with its bevy of porn stars, sex toys and nightclub afterparties, from South Beach to Fort Lauderdale may seem counterintuitive. But take it from an old hand at porn and Fort Lauderdale: It's nothing to be afraid of.

  15. The Mercurial Gallery in Danbury Celebrates 1/2 Halloween

The last two Halloweens in Connecticut were a bust. Two years ago it was "Frankenstorm." Last year it was Hurricane Sandy. The folks at the Mercurial Gallery are really into Halloween, but their fun kept getting canceled. And what with global warming and a busy predicted hurricane season for 2013, they're going to play it safe by having a 1/2 Halloween show with a reception this Friday, May 31st, exactly six months before/after actual Halloween. See spooky and/or offbeat paintings by Walter von Egidy, Tess Barbato and John Slaney and sculpture by William Blass before another natural disaster wipes our favorite holiday yet again.
