  5. Born to swing, if not to dance

As with his other performances, Tito Puente Jr.'s muscular cover of "Oye Como Va" on a live episode of "Dancing With the Stars" in October was jammed with percussive tributes to his father. So tight was Puente Jr.'s mambo set onstage, brought to an electric and synchronized finish by a troupe of hip-twisting dancers in the foreground, that he says producers asked him back to the show next season.

  7. The long, slow road to recovery

    Ana Veciana-Suarez

  11. Ponce recalls 19th century colonialism in Puerto Rico

PONCE, Puerto Rico - There was a time, not that long ago, when visitors to Puerto Rico's second-largest city were cautioned not to stray from the central plaza after dark. Many of Ponce's ornate 19th-century buildings were vacant and falling to pieces, and the poorly lit streets were made even shadier by some of the characters who roamed them looking for handouts - or worse.

  13. The Angry One plays Miami Nice

Eddie Palmieri is a bundle of intensity, whether playing his music or talking about it. His volcanic piano style is matched by his rapid-fire speech. When the man who has been called El Rompeteclas (the Keyboard Destroyer) and El Molestoso (the Angry One) speaks, people listen.

  23. Counter Intelligence: At modern Mo-Chica, the alpaca question

Have you been to the new Mo-Chica? Ricardo Zarate's Peruvian restaurant seems to define the downtown thing at the moment: It's a high-style warren on 7th Street, down the block from Bottega Louie, where the scene is as important as the drinks, and the drinks are as vital as the food.
