1. A sweet toast to St. Patrick's Day - and springtime

Top o' the mornin' to you! -- or whatever time of day it is you happening to be reading this. Saint Patrick's Day is coming this weekend. And its day of arrival this year, being a Sunday, offers a particular challenge to those of us who love to celebrate the holiday with more than a touch of the blarney.

  9. Our Picks: St. Patrick's Day Events Around Fairfield County

Top o' the mornin' to you. While many St. Patrick's Day parades have already turned our streets green with decorations (and maybe some vomit, caused by binge drinking before noon), the real, live, official St. Patrick's Day isn't until this Sunday. Many celebrations have yet to happen. The Ridgefield Playhouse hosts the Irish Comedy Tour on Thursday, featuring comedians Derek Richards, Mike McCarthy, Joey Carroll, Jim Campbell and Derrick Keane, all of Irish descent. Also on Thursday, the Stratford Library will be throwing a Leprechaun Party for children ages 5 to 12 in which kids are encouraged to wear green, listen to an Irish story, play games and eat green snacks. Friday is Bridgeport's parade day, and the march through the downtown area will beginning at noon, featuring performances by the Sheeaun Academy of Irish Dance (pictured), The Fairfield Gaelic Pipe and Drum Band, The Lenihan School of Dance and the Mummer's John's Uptown String Band. After the parade, go to Two Boots to hear music by Talking to Walls and Whiskey for Breakfast, as well as some bagpipe music. Meanwhile, Danbury's parade isn't happening until next Sunday, March 24th at 2 p.m., if you can recover from this week's festivities in time. The Fairfield Theatre welcomes U2Nation, a U2 tribute band, on Sunday, a bit of a stretch since they're just covering an Irish band, but we'll take it anyway. The Acoustic Cafe will open at 3pm Sunday and have an early show (music starts at 6pm) featuring Pocket Hotties, Darian Cunning, Talking to Walls and the Steve Detroy Trio.

I have no problem with horses, from Mr. Ed to Shane Battier’s “Harlem Shake” Horsetronaut, but am I the only one around here who has an issue with the Budweiser Clydesdales worming their way into our St. Patrick’s Day celebrations?

  21. Can UConn women beat Notre Dame in the postseason?

Don’t let fans of the UConn women’s basketball team near a leprechaun this St. Patrick’s Day. The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame, cheered by their leprechaun mascot, keep finding a way to defeat the Huskies in agonizing fashion. Monday’s triple-overtime game was as frustrating a loss as we’ve endured in years. A made foul shot here, taking better care of the ball there, and the Huskies walk off a winner. But it was not meant to be. Was there a leprechaun hiding behind Notre Dame’s basket? Did Muffet outcoach Geno? UConn and Notre Dame could face each other in both the Big East and NCAA tournaments. Who will win?
