7. As a 1920s ghost buster, Hall rounds up the chills in 'The Awakening' ★★½

Photographed in a particularly brooding corner of Scotland, set in a boarding school for the exceptionally pale and haunted, "The Awakening" got a "whatever" reception in its British release. Certainly you can poke a hundred holes in it: The explanation of the plot makes sense on an emotional level while making hash of logic and plausibility matters, and the co-writer and director Nick Murphy has only a fair-to-middling flair for composing a shot wherein a live human is suddenly a-frighted by a specter. Too often even a casual moviegoer can predict, from the length and framing of such moments: Yes, the ghost will appear just to the right of center, in approximately … now.

9. War's lingering phantoms

Robert Koehler

Well, sing hallelujah for a new, fresh, first-class Equity tour, which is about as rare these days as murder witnesses hiding out in convents when the sisters are just dying to be taught to love the night life, the boogie, the disco raa-ound. Wait. The...

15. 'The Apparition' review: Hilariously non-scary

Zero stars (out of four)
Zero stars (out of four) In the astoundingly incompetent “The Apparition,” the most legitimate conversation involves a debate about whether or not Costco sells saguaro cacti. Good news, green thumbs; it appears they do. Pretty much every...

17. 'The Awakening' review: Pretty good, but more pretty than good

**1/2 (out of four)
**1/2 (out of four) Last week's “The Apparition” contained an alarming lack of skill. So “The Awakening” represents a certain corrective because it disturbs for reasons other than nearly everyone involved in the horror movie not...

*1/2 (out of four)

23. Tom Morello keeps punk-rock spirit of Woody Guthrie alive

Tom Morello says he rarely gets nervous anymore before he performs, in part because he’s done just about everything from rocking stadiums with Rage Against the Machine to participating in protest rallies around the world as a guitar-thrashing activist. But he does admit to feeling a little jumpy whenever he plays with Bruce Springsteen, as he did a few weeks ago at the South by Southwest Music Conference in Austin, Texas.
