17. Three Openings at the Charter Oak Cultural Center in Hartford

Art is often best served in seemingly random, unrelated chunks: That's one of the takeaways of the three exhibits opening at Charter Oak Cultural Center this week, which include Under My Skin, a photographic exploration of the 1912 eviction of a mixed-race community from their homes on Malaga Island ("Eason Homestead, 1911," is pictured above) by the state of Maine; MIXUS, a collection from a Greater Hartford mixed-media artist collective, whose fondness for collage is no secret; and Melissa Croghan's Mother America Series paintings, documenting the artist's take on America's shifting identities in the wake of 9/11. As you look closer, affinities between the exhibits present themselves, as they always do: identity, nationhood, freedom, energy and religion, for starters. It's a lot to digest in one visit, but you can always go back for more.
