Aberdeen: The funeral service for Phyllis Reed, 81, Aberdeen, will be 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2011, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church with Pastor James Seeber and Pastor Mike Jacobson officiating. Burial will be at Black Hills National Cemetery.
Phyllis died Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital, Aberdeen, after a long battle with cancer.
Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, with family present from 6 to 7. A prayer service will follow at 7 p.m. at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St.
Phyllis Anne Reed was born on June 26, 1930, to Philip and Fannie (Bird) Jones on a farm south of Frankfort, S.D. After graduating from Frankfort schools, she attended Wayne State Teacher's College and Northern State Teacher's College. Phyllis then taught school at Cromwell School near Hitchcock. On July 20, 1950, she married Kenneth Reed in Redfield.
After marriage, Kenneth and Phyllis resided in Redfield, Aberdeen, Newell, and Ree Heights. In 1965, Kenneth accepted a position to manage Moreau Grand Electric in Timber Lake, where they resided until 1988, when they retired in Aberdeen. During their time in Timber Lake, Phyllis held various jobs including Deputy Treasurer for Dewey County, waitressed at Alf's Caf, and also worked at the Dewey County Bank. In 1982, Phyllis and her family built the cable TV system in Timber Lake.
Phyllis was a member of New Hope Lutheran Church, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Rebecca's and the Aberdeen Area Genealogical Society. Phyllis enjoyed researching and compiling her family's genealogy. She also enjoyed playing cards and socializing with the residents in her apartment building.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her siblings: Don, Glenn, Ima Bicknese, Ruby Avery, Harry, Marion Robertson, Vivian, Ione and Bird.
Grateful for having shared Phyllis' life are her six children: William (Patricia), Aberdeen, Richard (Subby), Wall, David Roger(Marcia Nemmers), Sioux Falls, Steven (Debra), Murdo, Michelle (Dean) Vilhauer, Aberdeen, and Charlene (Tom) Hager, Aberdeen; 18 grandchildren: Michael Reed, Jason Reed, Kristopher Reed (Mandy), Savannah Reed (Forrest Berg), Alexandra Reed. Morriah Reed, Jana Reed, Ryen (Kristin Gunderson) Reed, Konrad Lucas (Danielle) Reed, Sarah (Josh) Fischer, Kaitlin Reed, Whitney (Chris Peterson) Reed, Wendy Plummer, Jared (Lezlie) Vilhauer, Amy (Austin) Hoiland, and Leah (CJ Lane) Vilhauer, Cole Hager, and Cade Hager; great-grandchildren: Gavin, Jayden, Emery, Lexi, Tyler, Christopher, Kaylee, Emily, McKayla, McKenzie, Stefanie, Shayla; brother, Daryl Dutch (Delila); sister-in-law, Dolores Jones; and her lifelong friend, Marian West.
