Elvera Mildred Dahme was born June 27, 1932, to Otto and Elsbeth (Wagner) Dahme on the family farm near Westport, S.D. Her family moved into Aberdeen when she was young and she attended school there, graduating from Central High School. Elvera met Melvin Schaeffer at Skate Land roller rink in Aberdeen. They were married on July 14, 1951, in Aberdeen. They made their home in Aberdeen and Elvera held several jobs before devoting her life to caring for her family. Melvin died on Feb. 25, 1996.
Elvera was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Aberdeen. There she was active with Lutheran Women's Missionary League. Elvera loved the church and had a strong faith in her Lord. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the VFW Auxiliary. Elvera enjoyed time spent with her family and friends playing cards, bingo and bowling. Their family spent many vacations camping in the Black Hills and fishing. Elvera would always attend Melvin's softball games and the two of them loved to dance together. She was a wonderful cook. Elvera had a gentle and meek spirit. She was quiet, but loved the sounds of family when they came together. She will be greatly missed.
Grateful for having shared Elvera's life are her daughter, Judy Ulrich, Aberdeen; her sons: Steven (LaVonne) Schaeffer, Warner, S.D., and Robert (DeAnn) Schaeffer, Aberdeen; four brothers, Howard (Arlowene) Dahme, Orville (Doris) Dahme, Arthur (Joyce) Dahme and Earl Dahme; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
