Donald Allen Schussler was born August 15, 1927, in Independence Township of Day County, SD to Floyd Jacob and Adella Della (Liknes) Schussler. As a youngster, he grew up on the family farm near Kidder, SD. He attended school in Kidder and graduated from Kidder High School in 1945.
Shortly after completing his education, Don joined the U.S. Navy in June of 1945. While serving in the military, Don married Dorothy Jean Dot Williams at Overland, MO. They moved to Pensacola, FL, where Don continued his service to his country. He was later transferred to South Carolina and honorably discharged August 16, 1948.
Don and Dot moved to the farm north of Kidder where they raised their family. In addition to farming, Don served as a bus driver for the Kidder school from 1960 to 1970. He also did some part-time measuring for the ASCS office. Don retired from active farming in 1978, and they continued to make their home on the farm until moving into Britton in 1980.
Don had been a member of the E.U.B. Church in Kidder until it closed, and then became a member of Pleasant Valley Lutheran Church. He was a charter member of Reisnweber-Wolf Post #298 of the American Legion of Kidder. After moving to Britton, Don enjoyed going to Fun After Fifty and assisting with the work they do for Horton Inc. In his younger years, Don was an avid hunter. He enjoyed doing word puzzles and playing cards. Don was always willing to ride along with any friend that was making a long distance trip to pick up machinery or parts.
