Aberdeen: The Mass of Christian burial for Shirley J. Ullrich, 76, of Aberdeen will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 29, 2011, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Aberdeen, with Father Shaun Haggerty, celebrant. Burial will follow at Westport Cemetery. Shirley died Thursday, Aug. 25, 2011, at ManorCare Health Services, Aberdeen.
Visitation is from 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 28, with family present from 5 to 7 and a wake at 7 p.m. at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.
Shirley J. Mills was born on Aug. 8, 1935, to Forrest and Alice (Arndt) Mills in Aberdeen, S.D. She grew up and attended school in Aberdeen, graduating from Aberdeen Central High School in 1953. After high school, Shirley worked for a department store in Aberdeen for a couple of years.
Shirley married James Jim Ullrich on July 21, 1956, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Aberdeen. They continued to make Aberdeen their home and Shirley stayed at home to raise their three children. In the mid-1970s, Shirley started work as a loan officer for the SODES Credit Union that served employees of the Department of Labor. She stayed there for about 10 years. Later, she drove school bus for the Aberdeen School District for several years. For nearly 25 years, Shirley volunteered at the library at Simmons Elementary School. She dearly loved the children she was able to help.
Shirley was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Aberdeen. She enjoyed fishing and camping with her family. They would go camping in the Black Hills nearly every year. Shirley was an avid reader and enjoyed reading mystery novels. She also liked to cook and bake.
Grateful for having shared Shirley's life are her husband, Jim, of Aberdeen; three children, Michael (Sandy) Ullrich of Aberdeen, Patricia (Jay) Redlin of Estancia, N.M., and Thomas (Aimee) Ullrich of Bath, S.D.; five grandchildren, Jamie Ullrich, Brandon Ullrich, Courtney Ullrich, Zachary Ullrich and Connor Ullrich; and three nieces and nephews.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Forrest and Alice Mills; and her brother, Don Mills.
