Sun City West, Ariz.: Elizabeth Ann "Betty" Pfitzer, daughter of Hertha (Hauck) and Sam Spiry, was born Oct. 23, 1935, in Mobridge. She was raised and educated in Java where she eventually married Marvin Pfitzer on Feb. 12, 1956, at St. Paul Lutheran Church.
They owned and operated the Java Red Owl Store for 7 years, until they sold it to Marvin's brother, Bob. Betty started working at the Java School as a teacher's aide, then did substitute teaching and worked with disabled students. She was involved with all three of her children's activities as well as various women's groups in Java.
Betty and Marvin retired and moved to Sun City West, Ariz., where she worked at WalMart and later at Palmbrook Country Club as a receptionist.
Survivors include Ivy Pfitzer of Mesa, Ariz., Gwen (Will) Walker of Carlsbad, Calif., and Kent Pfitzer of Charlotte, N.C.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Tim (Virginia) Spiry of Madison, Minn., and Wallace (Bonnie) Spiry of Rapid City, S.D.
Preceding Betty in death include her parents; one daughter, Lori; and husband, Marvin.
A small service was held for Betty at the Church of Christ in Sun City West, Ariz., with Pastor John Waddy presiding.
She will be laid to rest beside Marvin at the Java Cemetery at a later date.
