Westport: A service to celebrate the life of Larry A. Gerlach, 64, Westport, will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, 2011, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 409 Third Ave. S.E., Aberdeen, with Father Kevin Zilverberg officiating. A lunch and time of fellowship will follow the service and then burial at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Westport, S.D.
A prayer service will be 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9, at Schriver's Memorial Mortuary and Crematory, 414 Fifth Ave. N.W.
Visitation is 3-7 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary and one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church.
Larry passed away Monday, Feb. 7, 2011, at St. Luke's Hospital, Aberdeen.
Larry A. Gerlach was born Oct. 6, 1946, to Alvin and Virginia (Stiegelmeier) Gerlach in Britton, S.D. He graduated high school at Northwestern School District and then worked for Hub City Iron in Aberdeen.
Larry and Susan O'Connor were united in marriage Sept. 2, 1967, in Redfield, S.D. They made their home in Aberdeen, where he was employed as the manager of the Aberdeen Elk's Club. They owned and operated 'The Shed' in Westport from 1976 to 1997.
He served on the Brown County Fair Board for six years and then manager of the Brown County Fair since January 1992. Through the years, Larry was recognized with many honors, including the 1996 People's Choice ABBY Award. He was president of the South Dakota Association of Fairs from 1997 through 2001 and was inducted into the Fairman's Hall of Fame in 2003.
Larry enjoyed car races, hunting, fishing and gardening. He loved a good deer hunt.
Larry's parents and one stepbrother, Ronald Riechert, preceded him in death.
Grateful to have shared in Larry's life is his wife, Susan, of Westport, S.D.; his children, Amy (Troy) Engelhart and Alvin (Michelle) Gerlach, both of Aberdeen, S.D.; his two special grandsons which he adored, Andrew and Matthew Gerlach; two sisters, Ann (Dallas) Hansen of Eden Prairie, Minn., Carol (Vince) Heyn of Huron, S.D.; his stepbrother, Armand (Darlene) DeYoung, of Mesa, Ariz., and his stepsister, Janice Labor of Huron, S.D.
