The Newport Harbor High School girls' volleyball program, which has produced the likes of Olympians Misty May-Treanor and April Ross, held a fashion show fundraiser Sunday at the Hidden Jewel Boutique and Gift Shop in Costa Mesa. The fashion show was co-hosted by Newport Beach's Antonia Shoe Boutique.
"Everybody was very generous and very kind," Event organizer Evelyn Yardley said. "It was pretty exciting, and the girls had a great time."
Senior and junior players modeled looks from designers like VeronicaM and Charlie Jade, while guests ate snacks donated by a number of local eateries, including Whole Foods Market, Nothing Bundt Cake and French's Cupcake Bakery.
Yardley said about 110 people turned out, raising about $4,000, minus about $500 in expenses. She said funds will be used for team equipment and for tournament trips.
"This was the first time we've done this," Yardley said, adding that she only started going "door to door" asking businesses for support in late August. "Next year, we're going to step it up."
Newport Harbor's volleyball program has won five state championships, the most of any public school, and eight California Interscholastic Federation championships, under Coach Danny Glenn.
