The Newport Wipeout , a girls' under-9 team from Newport AYSO Region 97 captured the title for its age group in the McMillan Tournament.
Over the Labor Day weekend hundreds of AYSO soccer teams from Southern California competed at the Costa Mesa Farm Sports Complex.
The Newport Wipeout notched wins against Rancho Santa Margarita (6-3), Mission Viejo (4-1) and Aliso Viejo (4-0).
During pool play the defense of Keilani Lee, Emma Martin, Madison Alaluf and Lauren Braun stymied the opposition.
Alaluf and Martin did double duty playing fullback and tending goal. Meanwhile, Trinity Rodman controlled the center field of play aggressively attacking the goal and hustling back to help on defense.
In the final, the team had a rematch with the tough Rancho Santa Margarita Dynamite. RSM struck first. However, the pestering Wipeout attack of forwards Alison Corr and Tyesha Aguilar, as well as midfielder Caroline Farley, proved to wear RSM down. Finally, midfielder Peyton Kassouf netted two goals on great direct kicks from 19 and 20 yards out to bring the Newport Wipeout the championship with a 2-1 win. Madison Alaluf once again proved solid in net.
