Surrounded by his players and members of the cheerleading squad, Burroughs High School Head Football Coach Keith Knoop looked out over a sea of classic cars covering the grass of Johnny Carson Park during last week’s John Burroughs High School Annual Car Show. “This is the 25th anniversary of this event, which is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year,” said Knoop. “It’s always a tremendous event and our football program would simply be non-existent if it wasn’t for what the Arrowhead Club does to support us.”
While the John Burroughs High School Booster Arrowhead Club works all year long to ensure the funding that keeps the Indians on the field of Memorial Stadium, they gear-up and go into overdrive for their annual car show.
Headed up by Fabian Ospina, the club’s president, last week’s show was made possible by the event staff comprised of Sonnie Monsalve, Marjorie Knoop, Lester Quintana and Julio Garcia and the volunteer help of numerous parents and supporters including Tony Wade, Anna Moskovyan, Lori Leck-Cohen, Bea Satmary and Monica Amaya.
Always an anticipated and well-attended event, this annual fundraiser offers visitors the chance to support the team with the chance to win raffle prizes, enjoy barbecued treats and peruse a plethora of vintage vehicles owned by locals including members of the Burbank Road Kings, many of which are Burroughs graduates from the 1950s through ‘70s. Among the Road Kings and other classic car owners who shared their prized possessions with the public were Jim Shaw, Ken Brock, Greg Simms, Don Baldesaroni, Bob Trainor, Don Chambers, Bill Murray, Mike Seeley, John Spone, Larry Nelson and Brad Keegan.
Other owners who happily answered questions and, in some cases, even let folks get the feel of their cars from the driver’s seats, were Patty Kemple, Jack Paloulian, Joey Johnson, Donn Nay, Dave Matter, Elayne Rodrigues, Mark Gomez, Bob Money, Louis Torres and Ray Astamendi.
Along with members of the school’s Freshman and Junior Varsity Football teams, last week’s event was enjoyed by Indians Varsity players Davion Barker, Marquette Williams, Oharjee Brown, Sean Johnson, Angel Manzanero, Hunter Harrison, Jake Gnasso, Jairo Gomez, Garrett Manoukian, Andrew Williams, Mirto Mirto, Jonathan Fuentes, Zach Hartman, Noah Tipton, Conor Joyce, Gorges Al Ajijian, Jaime Avila, Jason Monsalve, Raymond Cornejo, Josh Storer, Michael Kim, Danny Amaya, Israel Montes, Jonathan Salvatierra, Joseph Parker, Edward Quintanar, Dillon Meza, Jason Hamm, Zac Graston, Joseph Bautista, Jake Faunce, Tanner Young, Jesus Dozal, Ernesto Barraza, Ermar Cruz, Taylor Ens, Jacob Lopoez, Brad Peppmuller, Victor Mora, Gus Ruano, Mark Rodriguez, Paolo Chuidian, Daniel Marbach, Joseph Wallace, Jacob Pentland, Attapon Chaisamrong, Oscar Quintana, Andrew Mills, Scott Licata, Elliot Whitecotton, Able Maldonado, Jacob Nutty, Diego Corral and Jorge Villa.
